Open Question: How do I use an inverter Modulation Index to figure out how much power comes out of it?

Studying for test about solar power. Electricity doesn’t really like me and often the feeling’s mutual.
The question goes like this (we had to figure out the 25 and 5 given more information)
25 ARRAYS -> 25 BOOST CONVERTERS -> 5 DC BUSSES -> 5 INVERTERS -> 1 AC BUS -> 500KW OF RENEWABLE GOODNESS
The part I’m confused at is that we were told “Take inverter Modulation Index = 0.9.” What is a modulation index? My best guess is that it means you have losses in the inverter and only get 90% of the energy out. Is that right?
Please explain as you would to someone who only knows ~50% of the material from every electrical course she’s taken (The “D” stands for “Done”, right?)
