6. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Although science and technology will continue to improve, the most significant improvement for the quality of people’s lives have already taken place.
These days, a growing number of people opine that the quality of people’s lives will not be improved in the future, though science and technology will keep up advancing. However, from my own perspective, I believe that although it is difficult to predict exactly how they will impact our world in the future, one thing I am quite sure of is that they will continue to improve people’s lives in much more significant ways than in the past.
First of all, with the development of science and technology, it is more convenient for citizens to take the public transportation. For example, as opposed to the current relative low-efficient transportation, in the future, as the digital controlling system put into use, bus routes will be optimized dramatically, which means that redundant routes will be deleted and the number of bus routes in the commercial and residential areas will increase. More and more people will take the public transportation instead of their private cars to reach their destinations, which can eliminate traffic jams and reduce the time people spend on this.
Secondly, advanced science and technology will enable the environmental issues be settled in the future, which offers people a more comfortable and healthier environment. For one thing, oil will not be the primary fuel for automobiles and the popularity of solar-powered vehicles will take place petroleum-powered cars in the future, which means that the quantity of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, will diminish considerably. The reduction of greenhouse gases will not only make people keep away from the lethal gases emitted from cars, but also alleviate the negative effects of the inclination of the global climate warming. For another thing, other alternative fuels, such as wind, tide and nuclear will be widely used as the dominant sources for generating electricity instead of fossil fuels, which result in the more cleaner sky and rivers.
Thirdly, it is the Internet that makes it possible for white-collar workers to work at home in the future. According to the latest survey conducted by the Global Internet Association (GAI), the number of Internet users has increased 50% than 6 years ago. As the Internet plays an increasingly essential role in the people’s lives, virtually all the tasks or assignments will be completed by Internet in the future. People will not spend a lot of time on the road. So the time of work will extended considerably and people can finish more working tasks everyday, resulting in the fact that people can obtain the higher salaries. The increase of incomes will make people’s lives more colorful and interesting.
In a nutshell, science and technology are the cornerstone of the improvement of the quality of people’s lives. The more convenient public transportation, the more harmonious environment and the more efficient work will bring people the more wonderful lives!

5. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The most important problems in today’s world will be solved in our lifetime.
In our modern society, environmental degradation and poverty are viewed as the most important problems. A great number of people opine that along with the development of technology and the transformation of attitude, these complicated problems will be solved in our lifetime. Is it true? Negative! From my own perspective, I maintain that in our lifetime, human beings have not enough capacity to put an end to these issues.
First of all, environmental issues will not be solved thoroughly in the short term. The reasons are twofold. For one thing, based on the current science and technology, people have not enough ability to resolve environmental issues. For instance, the number of automobiles has soared dramatically over the past 40 years resulting in the global climate warming. But more environment-friendly vehicles, such as solar-powered cars, are still at the experimental stage, and it will take very long time to achieve mass production. So only if the technology matures, people can effectively restrict the tendency of climate warming. For another thing, environmental protection requires a huge sum of money, which can only backed by governments. But, in reality, the vast majority of nations are developing countries, which view the development of economy as their primary goal, instead of protecting environment. It is apparently unrealistic to force these nations to offer sufficient money to deal with global environmental degradation. So I maintain that within our lifetime, it is virtually impossible to resolve these complicated problems.
Secondly, poverty is another problem that we should not ignore. In the current world, especially in some poor nations, millions of people still cannot get sufficient food everyday and they are obliged to endure the starvation. Also, they could not afford to the most basic living products. Simultaneously, the poverty issues may well lead to the high crime rate, which exerts negative effects on the stability of societies. Some serious crimes, such as robbing, killing, raping and prostitution are likely to emerge quickly. In fact, these social problems are extremely hard to eradicate owing to the fact that they are triggered by various factors, such as political unrest, religious and racial conflicts and natural disasters, which are grossly complicated that people may well spend very very long time on making compromises to solve these intricate problems.
From what has been discussed above, we can draw the conclusion that those who deem that the most important problems in today’s world will be solved in our lifetime are too optimistic. Environmental issues and poverty are the most challenging problems to human beings, which will take considerable time to be solved.
